Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἄκαρπος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄκαρπος without fruit, barren ( < ἀ- a- prefix6 + κάρπος fruit: see carpo- comb. form2) + -ous suffix; compare -carpous comb. form. Compare French acarpe (1866).
Not producing fruit; unfruitful, sterile; (Botany). Frequently figurative: failing to achieve the desired results, unproductive; barren.
