Etymology: < paral- (in German paralisch (C. F. Naumann Lehrb. d. Geognosie (1852) II. ii. vii. 452) < ancient Greek παράλιος by the sea (see Paralian n.) + German -isch -ish suffix¹) + -ic suffix. Compare French paralique (1877 in Littré Suppl.).For an apparently isolated slightly earlier borrowing of the word in its German form compare the following:1911 Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. 50 28 Naumann recognized the distinction between deposits formed on the sea border and those in fresh-water lakes... These types he terms paralisch and limnisch.1911 Proc. Amer. Philos.
