单词 acarpellous
释义

acarpellousadj.

Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English apocarpellous.
Etymology: Probably a misreading of apocarpellous (see quot. 1836) < apo- prefix + scientific Latin carpellus carpel n. + -ous suffix. Kraus (see quot. 1844) refers to the source cited in quot. 1836, a review of a publication by J. Lindley; Kraus appears to have had the impression that the English word was used by Lindley. However, acarpellous has not been found in Lindley's publications, although Lindley does use a formation on carp- rather than carpel- (apocarpous adj.; compare quot. 1830 at apocarpous adj.) to refer to carpels. Compare scientific Latin acarpellus (1844 in the source cited in quot. 1844; also in later dictionaries) and French acarpellé (1858 or earlier), which are both after the English word, and both (apparently incorrectly) attributed to Lindley. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ækaɹpe·ləs) /ækɑːˈpɛləs/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Having no carpels.
