Etymology: < para- (in parachute n.; compare para- comb. form1) + kite n.
1. A kind of large kite constructed so as to be inflated by the wind like a parachute, designed and proposed for military use in 1875 by Joseph Simmons. Obsolete.

1875 10th Rep. Aeronaut. Soc. 75 An attempt was made by Mr. Simmons..to supplement the employment of a balloon in warfare by..a kite, which..he designated the parakite. It was, in fact, a combination of the parachute and kite.

A kind of tailless kite devised by Gilbert Woglom in 1896 for aerial photography and other purposes.
