Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German panoistisch.
Etymology: < German panoistisch (A. F. Brandt 1874, in Mém. de l'Acad. Impériale des Sci. de St. Pétersbourg 21 16) < pan- pan- comb. form + o- (see oo- comb. form) + -istisch -istic suffix. Compare meroistic adj.
Chiefly Entomology.
Designating or relating to an ovary or ovariole which produces ova only, without nurse cells. Contrasted with meroistic.

1877 T. H. Huxley Man. Anat. Invertebrated Animals vii. 443 Dr. A. Brandt has proposed the term panoistic for ovaries of the first mode, and meroistic for those of the second and third modes of development of the ova here described.

(ed. 3) ii. 71 The panoistic type [of ovariole] is devoid of trophocytes, the developing oöcytes being nourished by products elaborated from the blood by the follicular epithelium. This is the primitive type of egg-tube and is found in Apterygota, Orthoptera and other of the lower Pterygota.
