Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pannus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pannus film over the eye (a1250, 14th cent. in British sources), specific use of classical Latin pannus cloth, probably < the same Indo-European base as fane n.1 Compare French pannus (1721; Littré (1868) takes French panus as the more correct form and derives it from classical Latin pānus , Greek πῆνος web: see panicle n.1).In the form pannum after the Latin accusative singular; in the plural form panni after the Latin nominative plural.
Medicine.
An abnormal layer of granulation tissue or vascular fibrous tissue covering the cornea or other part of the body, esp. the surfaces of a joint or a prosthetic heart valve. In early use also: †a discoloured area of the skin (obsolete).
