Any of various American trees or shrubs with pale or whitish bark or wood, spec.: (a) any of several small trees or shrubs of the genus Celtis (hackberries: family Ulmaceae) found in desert areas of south-western North America, esp. C. reticulata; (b) the white-barked tree Lysiloma candida (family Mimosaceae ( Leguminosae)) of western Mexico; (c) a forest tree, Calycophyllum multiflorum (family Rubiaceae), of central South America. Also: the wood of such a tree.
