Etymology: < post-classical Latin paroemia proverb (3rd cent.; in classical Latin as a Greek word) < ancient Greek παροιμία proverb, maxim, in Hellenistic Greek also figure, comparison, probably < παρα- para- prefix¹ + οἴμη song (perhaps < οἶμος way, road, of uncertain origin) + -ία -ia suffix¹.

Rhetoric. rare after 16th cent.

A proverb or adage; an aphorism.In quot. 1854 used as plural.
