Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Parmeliaceae , -ous suffix; Latin Parmelia , -aceous suffix.
Etymology: Either < scientific Latin Parmeliaceae, family name (Zenker, 1827; < Parmelia (see below) + -aceae : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix, or < scientific Latin Parmelia, genus name (E. Acharius Methodus qua Omnes Detectos Lichenes (1803) ii. 153; < Hellenistic Greek πάρμη small round shield ( < classical Latin parma , probably a loanword) + εἰλεῖν to shut in, of uncertain origin) + -aceous suffix. Compare parmelioid adj.
Botany.
Belonging to or characteristic of the genus Parmelia of foliose lichens or the large family Parmeliaceae to which this genus belongs.
