Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palmatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin palmatus resembling a palm frond or the palm of the hand, of a deer's antlers and of leaves (4th cent.; in classical Latin (as palmātus ) in sense ‘having a palm-leaf pattern’) < classical Latin palma palm n.1 (see also palm n.2) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare French palmé (1754 in sense 1, 1758 in sense 2, 1783 in sense 5). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·lmĕt) /ˈpælmət/.
Botany and Zoology.
1. Zoology. Of an antler: in which the angles between the tines are partly filled in to form a broad flat surface, as in fallow deer and moose. Of an animal: having such antlers.
