单词 palmarosa
释义

palmarosan.

Brit. /ˌpalməˈrəʊsə/, /ˌpalməˈrəʊzə/, /ˌpɑːməˈrəʊsə/, /ˌpɑːməˈrəʊzə/, U.S. /ˌpɑ(l)məˈroʊzə/, /ˌpɑ(l)məˈroʊsə/
Forms: 1800s– palmarosa, 1900s– palmarossa (rare).
Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with a borrowing from Sanskrit. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian, combined with a borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Latin palma, Italian palma, Sanskrit rohiṣa.
Etymology: Apparently < either classical Latin palma palm n.1 or Italian palma palm n.1 + Sanskrit rohiṣa rosha n., with second element remodelled after either classical Latin rosa rose n.1 or Italian rosa rose n.1, perhaps because of the grass's rose-like scent or because it is used to dilute attar of roses. (This was a purely European development; G. Watt Commercial Products India (1908) 451 notes that the people of India were unaware of this use of the oil.) Compare Italian palmarosa (1895 or earlier in sense 2). Compare earlier rosha n.
1. A form or variety of the South and South-East Asian grass Cymbopogon martini; esp. the form of this grass which yields a characteristic essential oil (see sense 2). Also more fully palmarosa grass. Also called roosa grass or rosha grass (see rosha n.).This form of C. martini is often known as C. martini var. motia, although its status as a true variety is unclear.
