Etymology: < classical Latin palmārium that which deserves the prize, a masterpiece (see palmary n.) + -an suffix. Compare earlier palmary adj.1 N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation (pælmēə·riăn) /pælˈmɛərɪən/.
