Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin -fugus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin -fugus, combining form (in e.g. lūcifugus : see lucifugous adj.) of fugere to flee (see fuge v.) + -ous suffix.Found chiefly in borrowings and adaptations of Latin words (or occasionally of French words in -fuge -fuge comb. form), earliest in the 17th cent. in lucifugous adj., febrifugous adj., pestifugous adj. On uses in sense 2 compare discussion at -fuge comb. form.
1. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘fleeing from or avoiding (that which is specified by the first element)’, as calcifugous adj. at calcifuge adj. Derivatives, nidifugous adj.
2. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘driving out (that which is specified by the first element)’, as somnifugous adj.
