Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Panhard.
Etymology: < the name of René Panhard, French manufacturer and businessman (1841–1908), co-founder of a company (subsequently known as Panhard et Levassor, Panhard and Levassor, Panhard–Levassor) which was to manufacture motor vehicles. Compare French barre Panhard Panhard bar.
Panhard rod n. a rigid rod used to minimize side-to-side motion of the wheels of a motor vehicle relative to the body, being fixed across the vehicle so as to connect one end of an axle (usually the rear axle) to the body at the other side, and pivoted at each end. Also Panhard bar.
