Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παληκάρι.
Etymology: < modern Greek παληκάρι, παλληκάρι lad, man with youthful characteristics, brave person (Hellenistic Greek παλληκάριον (recorded in a papyrus as παλλικάριον); < παλληκ-, πάλληξ (also πάλλαξ) youth, of uncertain origin + -άριον, diminutive suffix). Compare Albanian palikar. Compare French palicare (1829), palikare (1832; now also pallicare, pallikare).
Now chiefly historical.
In the Balkans: a member of a militia or armed guard; spec. an armed follower of a Greek or Albanian military chief, esp. during the Greek war of independence (1821–32).
