Etymology: < post-classical Latin palification-, palificatio foundation of piles (early 14th cent.) < palificat- , past participial stem of palificare to make a foundation of piles (late 12th cent.; < classical Latin pālus pale n.1 + -ficāre -fy suffix) + -io -ion suffix1. Compare Italian palificazione (1554; also as palificatione (1598 in Florio)).
Obsolete.
The action or process of driving piles or stakes into the ground to make it firmer for building.
