Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paraesthesia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin paraesthesia (1848 or earlier) < para- para- prefix1 + -aesthesia (in anaesthesia anaesthesia n., etc.; compare aesthesia aesthesia n., and -aesthesia comb. form), probably as alteration of paraesthesis paraesthesis n.
Medicine.
Originally: any abnormality of sensory function. Later: spec. the abnormal sensation of tingling, numbness, or burning, usually in an extremity; an instance of this.
