Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French palissandre.
Etymology: < French palissandre (1718; 1681 as palisante) < Dutch palissander, shortened < palissanderhout (mid 17th cent. as palissantenhout), probably alteration of Spanish palo santo guaiacum, lignum vitae (1526; 1616 as paul de santo; probably applied to a number of other hardwoods in the American Spanish context), perhaps with some influence from palo sándalo sandalwood (a hardwood that was also becoming known at this time).
Dark ornamental wood derived from any of various tropical American trees, esp. jacaranda, Brazilian rosewood ( Dalbergia nigra), and (U.S.) purple heart ( Peltogyne paniculata).
