Etymology: < scientific Latin Palinurus, genus name (F. Weber Nomenclator Entomologicus Secundum Entomologiam Systematicam Fabricii (1795) 94; originally published as Pallinurus but appearing in emended form in J. C. Fabricius Supplementum Entomologiae Systematicae (1798) 376; < classical Latin Palinūrus : see Palinurus n.) + -oid suffix. Compare scientific Latin Palinuroidea, superfamily name (mid 19th cent.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæliniū^ə·roid) /pælɪˈnjʊərɔɪd/.

Zoology. Obsolete.

Belonging to or resembling the genus Palinurus of spiny lobsters, or the superfamily Palinuroidea which includes it.
