单词 palinodia
释义

palinodian.

Forms: 1500s palinodā (plural), 1600s palinodium, 1600s–1800s palinodia.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palinodia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin palinodia recantation (4th cent., originally with reference to Stesichorus; cited as a Greek word in classical Latin authors), refrain (late 4th cent.) < ancient Greek παλινῳδία recantation < πάλιν back again, over again (see note) + ᾠδή song (see ode n.). The Greek word was first used of an ode by Stesichorus, in which he recants his attack upon Helen. Compare Italian palinodia (a1530), Portuguese palinodia (16th cent.), Spanish palinodia (17th cent.). Compare also earlier palinody n., palinode n.Ancient Greek πάλιν probably represents use as adverb of the accusative of an unattested noun denoting the fact of turning or returning < an ablaut variant of the base of πέλεσθαι to be in motion, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as wheel n. In form palinodium probably after post-classical Latin palinodium (early 15th cent. or earlier in British sources). In form palinodā apparently showing a mark of suspension for palinodia (plural).
