Etymology: < classical Latin papāver poppy (see papaverous adj.) + -ic suffix. In sense (b) after German Papaverinsäure (G. Goldschmiedt 1885, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissenschaften 91 1119). Compare German †Mohnsäure meconic acid (1806; < Mohn poppy (see maw seed n.) + Säure acid).R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form papavericus.
