Etymology: < Haitian Creole papalwa < Yoruba babaláwo priest devoted to Ifá divination (see Babalawo n.), with remodelling after French papa father (see papa n.²). Compare earlier Babalawo n. Compare also mamaloi n.

Chiefly in Haiti: a male voodoo priest. Cf. mamaloi n.
