Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French papable.
Etymology: < Middle French, French papable (c1590) < pape pope n.1 + -able -able suffix, after Italian papabile (a1566). Compare post-classical Latin papabilis (1483, 1610 in British sources), also papabilitas papacy (late 14th cent.). Compare later papabile adj.
Eligible or suitable to be elected to the papacy; = papabile adj. 1.
