Etymology: < French paletot, †palletot kind of waistcoat (early 15th cent. in Middle French), jacket worn by women or girls (1849 or earlier), overcoat (1868), alteration of Middle French, French †palletoc paltock n. N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized and also gives the pronunciation (pæ·ltōu) /ˈpæltəʊ/.
1. A loose coat, cloak, or other outer garment. Now chiefly historical.
