Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pale v.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < pale v.1 + -er suffix1.With form palyer compare -ier suffix and discussion at that entry. Apparently attested earlier as a surname: Radulfus le Paeler (1194), although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as Middle English or Anglo-Norman.
Now historical and rare.
A person who puts up a paling or fence; an officer of a park charged with keeping the fences in repair.
