Etymology: < Pandora (classical Latin Pandōra ), the name in classical mythology of the first human female on whom all the Olympian gods bestowed gifts < ancient Greek Πανδώρα , literally ‘all-gifted’ < παν- pan- comb. form + δῶρον gift (see -dor suffix). Compare Pandora's box n.The form Pandore shows alteration for the purposes of rhyme.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian pandora; French pandore.
Etymology: Partly < Italian pandora (1541; compare α. forms), and partly < French pandore (1519 in Middle French; compare β. forms), both ultimately < classical Latin pandūra three-stringed lute (see pandoura n.). Compare bandore n.1The Italian and French forms denoted various types of lute, but the precise sense development apparently occurred within English. With the form pandola at α. forms perhaps compare Italian regional (Naples) pandola or Spanish bandola (see bandore n.1). With the γ. forms compare pandoura n.
Early Music. Now historical.
A musical instrument similar to a lute, with metal strings set in pairs and a scalloped body. Cf. bandore n.1

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pandora, genus name (Lamarck 1799, in Mém. Soc. Nat. Hist. Paris 88; < Italian pandora pandora n.2); after its elongated oval shape. Compare French pandore (Lamarck 1799, as above).
Zoology.
Any of various marine bivalve molluscs of the genus Pandora or family Pandoridae, typically having one flat valve and one convex one (resulting in a shape likened to the soundbox of a stringed instrument). Also pandora shell.
