Forms: 1700s Pandarrum, 1700s Pantare, 1700s Pantarongal (plural), 1700s Pundarah, 1700s– Pandaram. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil paṇṭāram.
Etymology: < Tamil paṇṭāram storehouse, treasury, Saiva devotee, monk or friar (with implication of a holy person, or one in whom merit or treasure abides) < Prakrit bhaṇḍāra and its etymon Sanskrit bhaṇḍāgāra temple treasury.In form Pantarongal after the Tamil plural paṇṭārankaḷ. Forms without final m reflect the Tamil stem paṇṭāra-.
Hinduism. Now chiefly historical.
In southern India and Sri Lanka: an ascetic mendicant or low-caste Hindu priest.
