Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish palenque.
Etymology: < American Spanish palenque (in Cuba) a remote place used as refuge by escaped slaves, (in Argentina) a kind of cattle shed, spec. use of Spanish palenque enclosure (late 14th cent.; 1250 as palenco in an isolated attestation) < Catalan palenc stockade, enclosed area for jousting (13th cent. or earlier), probably < Old Occitan palenc stockade, enclosed area for jousting (c1200) < pal pale n.1 + -enc , suffix forming nouns. Compare palank n. N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized, and gives the pronunciation (pale·ŋke) /paˈleŋke/, while O.E.D. (1989) transcribes it /paˈlenke/.
In Jamaica and Latin America.
