Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palea.
Etymology: < classical Latin palea chaff, husk (also ‘wattle, dewlap’, although this may represent a different word), in post-classical Latin also in botanical use in sense 1a (18th cent.), ultimately < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit palāva chaff, husks, Old Church Slavonic plěvy husks, Russian pelëva, polova chaff, and forms in other Indo-European languages.
1. Botany.
a. Any of the scales found on the receptacle at the base of the individual florets in many plants of the family Asteraceae ( Compositae). Cf. pale n.5 2.
