Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Paragonit.
Etymology: < German Paragonit (C. E. Schaffhäutl 1843, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 46 334) from ancient Greek παράγων leading aside or astray, misleading, present participle of παράγειν to lead astray ( < παρα- para- prefix1 + ἄγειν to lead: see agon n.) + German -it -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A mineral of the mica group which differs from muscovite in containing sodium rather than potassium.
