Etymology: < para- prefix1 + geosyncline n.The sense development was influenced by German Parageosynklinale (H. Stille 1935, in Sitzungsber. der Preuss. Akad. der Wissensch.: Phys.-Math. Kl. 182): compare quot 1936 at main sense.
Geology. Now rare.
A geosyncline situated within an older craton or (originally) at the edge of a continental craton.With the rise of the plate-tectonic model from the 1960s, the concept of geosynclines has been regarded as obsolete by most geologists.
