Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin pancratium; Greek παγκράτιον.
Etymology: < classical Latin pancratium and its etymon ancient Greek παγκράτιον sporting contest combining wrestling and boxing, also (on account of its supposed medicinal properties) sea-daffodil < παν- pan- comb. form + κράτος bodily strength, mastery (see -cracy comb. form) + -ιον , suffix forming nouns: compare παγκρατής all-powerful. Compare earlier pancratical adj. With sense 1 compare Middle French, French pancrace (1583 in Middle French in an isolated attestation; subsequently from 1738; also in 18th cent. as †pancratium , †pancration ), Italian pancrazio (1604). With sense 2 compare French †pancratium sea-daffodil (1694–1874; now pancrais (1803)). In sense 2 adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 290.
