Origin: A borrowing from Bengali. Etymon: Bengali pānsui.
Etymology: < Bengali pānsui, pansoī, variants (the -u- , -o- is perhaps diminutive) of pānsi pinnace < English pinnace (see pinnace n.; perhaps influenced by various words to do with water and sailing with initial pān- in local vernaculars: compare pani n.) + Bengali -i, suffix forming adjectives.Although adjectival in form, Bengali pānsi is generally glossed as a noun and derived < English pinnace in Bengali dictionaries (1911 onwards); pānsui is listed as an adjective, qualifying naukā boat (1971). Compare Bihari pansūhī, Hindustani pansoī. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·ntʃwēi, pæ·nswēi) /ˈpæntʃweɪ/ /ˈpænsweɪ/. The s in the Bengali forms is pronounced /ʃ/.
