Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πάγχρηστον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πάγχρηστον universal remedy, use as noun of neuter singular of ancient Greek πάγχρηστος good for everything < παν- pan- comb. form + χρηστός useful (see chrestomathy n.). Compare classical Latin panchrēstos, panchrēstus good for everything, panchrēstum medicāmentum universal remedy (Cicero and Pliny). Compare also Italian pancresto (1598 in Florio).
