Etymology: < Tibetan paṇchen, short for paṇdita chen-po great scholar, great learned one < paṇdita learned ( < Sanskrit paṇḍita learned, wise: compare pundit n.) + chen great + -po, suffix forming nouns.
Buddhism.
In Tibetan Buddhism: (a title of respect given to) the Tashi Lama, head of the Tashilhunpo monastery (in central Tibet) and the second most important Tibetan incarnate lineage after the Dalai Lama; = Panchen Lama n. Cf. Tashi Lama n.
