Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palato-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin palato-, combining form (in e.g. palatopharyngeus palatopharyngeus n.) of classical Latin palātum palate n.First attested in the mid 18th cent. in palatopharyngeus n., which is borrowed from post-classical Latin. English formations in chiefly anatomical and medical senses are found from the later 18th cent. (compare palatoplasty n., palatomaxillary adj.). Formations in senses relating to phonetics appear towards the end of the 19th cent. Compare earlier palatal adj. Chiefly combined with elements ultimately of Latin or Greek origin. Compare French palato- (attested in borrowings or adaptations in medical and anatomical senses from the 18th cent., and in phonetics from the second half of the 20th cent.).
Forming nouns and adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to the palate’ or ‘of, relating to, or connecting the palate and ——’.
palatognathous adj. Medicine Obsolete rare having a cleft palate.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
