1850 H. Beasley Druggist's Gen. Receipt Bk. 345 Papyrine. Dip white unsized paper for ½ a minute in strong sulphuric acid, and afterwards in water containing a little ammonia. When dries it has the toughness and appearance of parchment.
1890 Manufacturer & Builder Dec. 288/3 An Englishman, Gaines by name, took out a patent for the material in England, and undertook its manufacture. The original discoverers gave it the name ‘papyrin’.
1926 A. W. Schorger Chem. Cellulose & Wood ix. 305 The paper resembled animal parchment. It was called ‘papyrine’. Similar products were later known as vegetable parchment and amyloid.

Etymology: < classical Latin papȳrīnus of papyrus < papȳrus papyrus n. + -īnus -ine suffix2. Compare Hellenistic Greek παπύρινος . With sense 2 compare French papyrin (1838). Compare earlier papyrian adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (păpəi·rin) /pəˈpaɪrɪn/.
