Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Latin acara; Portuguese acará.
Etymology: < scientific Latin acara, specific name (in Sparus acara: B. G. E. de la V. de Lacépède Hist. nat. des poissons (1802) IV. 52) or its etymon Brazilian Portuguese acará (1587) < Tupi aka'ra.
Any of several deep-bodied, freshwater cichlid fishes native to Central and South America, with elongated dorsal and anal fins; esp. one now in the genus Aequidens or Cichlasoma. Also (in form Acara): the former genus including many of these fishes (now disused). Valid publication of the (former) genus name: E. Haeckel (1840) in Ann. des Wiener Mus. der Naturgeschichte 2 338.
