Etymology: < classical Latin pappus pappus n. + -escent suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Pappescentes , plural (1720 in the source of quot. 1722). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ̆pe·sĕnt) /pæˈpɛsənt/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
Producing a pappus; having seeds surrounded by down.
