Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Etymons: French papouch; Turkish pabuç.
Etymology: < (i) French papouch (1542; 1665 as paboutches (plural) in the passage translated in quot. 1687; 1676 as papouches (plural) in the passage translated in quot. 1678), and its etymon (ii) Turkish pabuç shoe, slipper < early modern Persian pāpōš < foot + pōš (modern Iranian Persian pūš ) cover, covering. Compare French babouche (see babouche n.; now the usual form in French). Compare babouche n., pampootie n.
A Turkish or Middle Eastern slipper, usually made of soft leather. Cf. babouche n.
