Etymology: < medieval Greek παπίζειν (a1571 in Latin context in the passage translated in quot. 1629) < post-classical Latin papa pope n.1 + ancient Greek -ίζειν -ize suffix, after ancient Greek ϕιλιππίζειν philippize v.1 Compare slightly earlier papizing adj., popizing adj.

intransitive. To act on behalf of or in accordance with the wishes of the Pope.
