Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin papisticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin papisticus popish (1520 in Luther; from 1538 in British sources) < papista papist n. + -icus -ic suffix. Compare Middle French, French papistique (1550 or earlier in Calvin), German papistisch (1539 or earlier). Compare earlier papistical adj.
Chiefly derogatory.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Roman Catholics or the Roman Catholic Church; = papist adj. Also as n.: †a Roman Catholic (obsolete).
