Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πάντοθεν , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πάντοθεν from every side ( < παντο- panto- comb. form + -θεν , suffix forming adverbs indicating motion from) + -ic suffix (see quot. 1933 for pantothenic acid n.).
Biochemistry.
pantothenic acid n. an oily, liquid carboxylic acid whose molecule consists of β-alanine linked to a pantoyl residue, and which is widely distributed in plant and animal tissues (mainly as a component of coenzyme A) and is essential for normal carbohydrate and fat metabolism; HOCH2C(CH3)2CHOH·CO·NH(CH2)2COOH. Also called vitamin B5.
