pantothenic acid n. an oily, liquid carboxylic acid whose molecule consists of β-alanine linked to a pantoyl residue, and which is widely distributed in plant and animal tissues (mainly as a component of coenzyme A) and is essential for normal carbohydrate and fat metabolism; HOCH₂C(CH₃)₂CHOH·CO·NH(CH₂)₂COOH. Also called vitamin B₅.
