单词 palampore
释义

palamporen.

Brit. /ˈpaləmpɔː/, U.S. /ˈpɑləmˌpɔr/
Forms:

α. 1600s pallampose, 1800s palang posh.

β. 1600s– palampore, 1600s– palempore, 1700s palimpore, 1800s palempour, 1900s– palimpure, 1900s– pallampore.

Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi palaṅg-poś.
Etymology: < Hindi palaṅg-poś bedspread, coverlet < palaṅg bed ( < Sanskrit palyaṅka : compare palanquin n.) + early modern Persian pōš cover (see papoosh n.). The β forms perhaps arose as an inferred singular of perceived plural palampores, palempores, which might have been attempts to represent the Hindi pronunciation (with long o) of the singular, with voicing of the final consonant after Portuguese. The medial -m- is also likely to be after Portuguese pronunciation. Compare Portuguese palangapuzes, plural of palangpus (1727).
Now historical.
A kind of richly patterned cotton cloth, originally made in India. Also: a piece of this cloth; a bedspread or shawl made from this cloth. Also in extended use.
