Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Palagonit.
Etymology: < German Palagonit (W. S. von Waltershausen 1845, in Göttinger Studien i. 402) < Palagonia , the name of a city in Sicily where the substance can be found + -it -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy and Geology.
A yellowish or brownish siliceous substance formed by the hydration and chemical alteration of basaltic glass, and occurring in vitreous basaltic tuffs that have undergone rapid chilling.
