Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palaestricus.
Etymology: < classical Latin palaestricus of or relating to the palaestra < ancient Greek παλαιστρικός < παλαίστρα palaestra n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French, French palestrique (1557), Spanish paléstrico (1585). Compare earlier palaestrical adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pălī·strik, -e·strik) /pəˈliːstrɪk/ /-ˈɛstrɪk/.
