Etymology: < Middle French, French panache tuft or plume of feathers (1546; earlier as pannache (1527), pennache (1524); forms in pan- are probably by association with other words in pan- ), manly elegance or swagger, chivalrous or heroic courage, flamboyance, elegance, style (1854), plume-like solar prominence (1884 or earlier) < Italian pennacchio (a1470 or earlier) < post-classical Latin pinnaculum pinnacle n.
