Etymology: < pan- comb. form + Germanism n. Compare French pangermanisme (1845), German Pangermanismus (1857 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier pan-Slavism n. and also pan-Slavonism n. Compare slightly later pan-German adj.
The idea or principle of the political unification of all Germans or German-speaking peoples in Europe (and occasionally all peoples speaking a Germanic language); advocacy of this as a policy. Also: solidarity and fellow feeling amongst Germans and German-speakers; German nationalism, esp. of an aggressive, expansionist kind.
