Forms: 1800s– palaeoniscoid, 1900s– paleoniscoid (chiefly North American).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Palaeoniscus , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Palaeoniscus, genus name (see palaeoniscid adj. and n.) + -oid suffix. Compare scientific Latin Palaeoniscoidei , suborder name. The adjective was used in a report by R. H. Traquair which was read to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in July 1880 (and reviewed in quot. 1881 at sense A.), but not published until 1883. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the pronunciation (-onis·koid) /-əʊˈnɪskɔɪd/ for the second element.
Palaeontology.
A. adj.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of a large group of extinct actinopterygian fishes with heterocercal tails, mainly of Palaeozoic times (thought to be related to the modern sturgeons and paddlefishes); spec. designating the diamond-shaped ganoid scales characteristic of these fishes.
