Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Palaeoniscidae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Palaeoniscidae, family name (attributed to Vogt 1852) < scientific Latin Palaeoniscus , genus name (L. Agassiz Recherches sur les poissons fossiles (1833) II. v. 41; < palaeo- palaeo- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek ὀνίσκος a sea fish of the cod type < ὄνος ass, fish of the cod family (see onocentaur n.) + -ίσκος , diminutive suffix) + -idae (see -id suffix3). Compare palaeoniscoid adj.
